dominic michael hunt and his twin sister were born approximately nine months after victoria winston, a young aspiring chef from a nondescript little new england town, decided to put an end to her affair with
martin hunt, a handsome and charismatic man who, unbeknownst to her at the time, was already married to another woman. martin was the sole heir to hunt international, a real estate development empire that began when his great-grandfather
arrived in america at the turn of the 19th century and began buying up land and properties in what would eventually become the financial district of manhattan. over the years, his sons and grandsons continued to amass a vast portfolio of
commercial and rental properties as well as several luxury hotels and resorts around the world.
victoria didn't expect martin to leave his wife for her when she informed him of the fact that he was going to be a father. she told him that he was free to be as involved as he wanted to be; she had a life and a career, and she was prepared to be a single mother and raise the child all on her own if she had to. martin saw it as an opportunity to get out of his convenient but loveless marriage, despite the scandal it would bring to the family. the long, drawn-out divorce that ensued wasn't finalized until after dominic and cassandra was born, but he was given the last name hunt even though another year would go by before victoria finally agreed to marry martin. dominic was raised in his mother's hometown. victoria, who had no interest in moving into one of the hornes' glitzy penthouses in new york city, had been adamant on that point. she had inherited a farmhouse bed and breakfast inn from an elderly aunt and was committed to restoring it as a historical landmark. she had grown up there and wanted to raise her own family there as well. although martin expected that his son would follow in his footsteps and take over the family business when he was old enough, he didn't see the harm in letting victoria have her way for the time being. he grew up with more of his mother's influence than his father's. martin spent what time he could with his new family, but as the head of the hunt family's company and its various other interests, his work frequently took him to new york and other parts of the world. dominic had a happy childhood, and as he grew older, it became clear that he took after his mother, sharing her love for nature and the outdoors. victoria taught him and his sister to sail, ski, and care for horses and livestock - all things that she loved about her own childhood that she had always wanted to share with her own children. when dominic turned twelve, martin decided that it was time for him to start getting some exposure to the company that he would one day inherit. from then on, every summer was spent at the hunt international offices in new york city, where he shadowed employees in every department and sat in on meetings, read legal business contracts, and accompanied his father on business trips to various corners of the world, learning everything there was to learn about the ins and outs of the business. when it was time for him to go to college, stanford, which had been his father's and grandfather's alma mater, seemed a natural choice, but he instead chose to attend ucla. he took to the change of atmosphere immediately. after having grown up primarily in new england, the southern california coast was a magical land of perpetual sunshine and boundless potential for adventure. he continued to break with tradition. rather than following the path of business or law that was expected, he pursued undergraduate degrees in engineering and statistics before obtaining his mba at stanford. during his final year, he was officially offered a position working under his father at hunt enterprises upon graduation. although the offer was given more or less as a formality and everyone expected him to join the ranks at the company when his time allowed, dominic had come to realize that the path that had been carved out for him might not be the one he wanted for himself. in the end, he surprised them by turning the offer down in favor of pursuing his own path. he sold his shares in the family company and used the capital to fund the creation of apex technologies, an aerospace engineering venture with two friends from college. over the next few years, apex transformed from one small startup to a diversified portfolio of various companies in the technology sector. eventually, he was able to buy back his original stake in hunt international. |
